G. Verdi’s «Un ballo in maschera» in the neoclassical spirit

Review on G. Verdi’s «Un Ballo in Maschera» performed at the opening of «Arena di Verona–2014» Opera Festival (Verona, Italy) includes the characteristics of stage interpretation by Pier Luigi Pizzi and his «neoсlassic» direction of this opera. The author also throws light upon protagonists’ performance: Francesco Meli (Riccardo), Hui He (Amelia), Luca Salsi (Renato), Serena Gamberoni (Oscar), Elisabetta Fiorillo (Ulrica). Besides it the probably reasons of negative perception of the opera by Verdi’s contemporaries are analysed. The author examines in short the staging practice connected with «double-dealing» scenography of the opera. Some observations about the music dramaturgy of the opera, in particular the most important thematic elements are adduced.
