Research sphere and interests

The scope of Lev Atlas` research interests is performing art, Russian chamber music, the history of Soviet musical art of the twentieth century, musical creative unions.

Activities

Since 1997, Lev Atlas has been a professor of the Strings faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland (class of viola and chamber ensemble). A significant part of his work at the Conservatory occupies the development of methodological and practical materials that serve to develop the performing skills of viola students.

Professor Lev Atlas created a series of Master Classes called “Transcendental Alt”, which has received wide recognition in both the UK and many other European conservatories.

In 2013, Lev Atlas defended his thesis "In the Shadow of Shostakovich" (PhD) at the University of St. Andrews (Edinburgh, United Kingdom). The study is devoted to Soviet chamber music of 1970–1990.
