National Melos as a Style Component: to the Question on the Peculiarities of Piano Arrangements of the Russian Song in the Creativity of M. A. Balakirev

The article highlights the important for understanding the genesis of the arrangement, a question related to the stylistics of the processing of folk tunes in the works of M. A. Balakirev. The historical context is considered, against which the primordially popular peasant song begins to recover a new life from the middle of the 19th century. The role played by the composer in this field of creative activity is determined. The author examines in detail the compositional methods that have become for M. A. Balakirev a tool for decorating the style and surprisingly exactly corresponding to the nature of folk tunes. These include, in particular, the elements of the sub-voice polyphony, the subordination of chord invoice to the harmonic logic of the choral polyphony, the ostinat forms of accompaniment characteristic of folk instrumental music, the techniques of the program-visual character, the coloring of harmonic diatonic tunes, original bass structure solutions with a departure from harmonic functionality. The role played by the composer’s finds both in his own work and in their further development by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, M. P. Mussorgsky and A. P. Borodin was emphasized.
