Towards the history of one S. Rachmaninoff’s dedication

The article examines the history of the dedication of S. Rachmaninoff’s cycle «Six Musical Moments» for piano Op. 16 to Alexander Zataevich. In general, the presence of dedications in musical texts did not receive appropriate consideration in musicology. In this regard, the author determined some theoretical – genre, functional – aspects of a dedication analysis as a textual unit, the purpose of which is an open demonstration of the author’s respectful / friendly / benevolent / romantic attitude towards the addressee.

The presence of dedication indicates the predominantly personal nature of the relationships between them. A significant part of S. Rachmaninoff’s works has dedications. Their addressees were relatives, friends, colleagues, teachers of the composer. A. Zataevich was a friend of Rachmaninoff, who went down in history of music as a composer – ethnographer, collector of of the peoples of Central Asia folklore. His early vocal and instrumental miniatures are less known, in the creation and publication of this works Rachmaninoff was directly involved. The dedication of the «Six Musical Moments» for the piano is the starting point of the history of their lasting connection, which reflected the separate events of the life and work of the two musicians. On the material of their correspondence a very unusual situation of their first encounter is described and the stages of their personal connections are traced. The facts of Zataevich’s biography preceding his musical formation and meeting with Rachmaninoff are presenting, and his musical pieces of the pre-revolutionary period were created and published with Rachmaninoff’s help are described. Attention was paid to the social activities of Zataevich and his music criticism, which contributed a lot to the popularization of Rachmaninoff’s music in the western regions of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century.
