The Problems of the Word for Word Translation of the Italian Operatic Librettos

The article substantiates the importance and relevance of work with the word for word translation in connection with the current trend of performing operas in the original language. The author considers the linguistic characteristics of the libretto of operas in the Italian language, highlighting the lexical, grammatical and syntactic features. The characteristic features of opera libretto are analyzed against the background of the historical processes of development of the Italian language. The article contains fragments of literary texts with the word for word translation. The author draws attention to language difficulties and «pitfalls» that a translator or performer may encounter. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the figurativeness of the poetic language of opera librettos. The author emphasizes that translation activities require special knowledge and practical experience, as it involves a lot of preliminary preparation, including the collection of extensive information on the history of the opera, the composer, librettist, a possible literary source of the plot. From the point of view of the author of the article, this approach allows one to form a correct understanding of the historical context of the opera work, which determines the specificity of the translation.
