Sonatas by M. Reger for solo violin in context of the contemporary polyphonic repertoire of music colleges

The published article highlights the problems associated with the enrichment and expansion of the polyphonic violin repertoire of Russian music colleges. Based on this, the author pays special attention to sonatas for violin solo op. 42 and 91, owned by the prominent German composer M. Reger (1873–1916) and traditionally referred to as the “Bachian” or “neoclassical” tendencies in the development of the appropriate genre. As is known, similar solo works for viola and cello (op. 131c and 131d) have featured in the repertoire of music colleges and high schools for many years. Difficulties in learning M. Reger’s violin sonatas by young performers are primarily due to the artistic diversity of these compositions. “Bachian” tendencies in these sonatas interact with individually refracted “echoes” of Viennese classicism and with tangible influences of chamber instrumental music of the late Romantic era. The purposeful desire for an organic synthesis of the indicated components, typical of M. Reger, in fact, is not limited to a variety of genre and style pairings. Synthesizing processes are also observed at the compositional and musical-dramatic levels of Reger’s violin sonatas, often giving a rather peculiar appearance to the polyphonic writing within the limits of a certain cycle. According to the researcher, this is due to the deep interpenetration of the harmonic and contrapuntal principles, which dominate the composer’s individual thinking. Such versatility favors, on the one hand, the interpretation of M. Reger’s sonatas as a remarkable example of polyphonic music of the 20th century, and, on the other hand, the productive use of the corresponding opuses as “preparatory” artistic material for learning Bach’s heritage for solo violin.
