Devoted to Russia with heart... (On L. Klinichev’s work)
The article is dedicated to the Rostov composer, Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation, Professor Leonid Klinichev, who turns 85 in 2023. It examines his work from the angle of the most important themes, genres and his creative community. The main theme of his art is the fate of Russia and Russian people in difficult historical periods. The composer’s works are based on the literary masterpieces of Russian writers and poets. The article elucidates the creative collaboration between Klinichev and People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, opera director L. Gergieva. Thanks to her participation in the search for plots, a number of operas emerged, particularly an opera trilogy dedicated to Russian poetesses of the 20th century – Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva and Zinaida Gippius.
The theme of the Don Cossacks, which was embodied in the ballet “Quiet Don” and the opera “Cossacks” is of great importance in Klinichev’s oeuvre. It is noted that the composer turns to folklore sources as musical material: he quotes them, uses characteristic melodies and chants. However, the most interesting is the way of creating original works in the spirit of Cossack traditions. The article examines such works on the example of the original chorus “Tuman yarom” and the auto-quotation of its theme in the ballet “Quiet Don”. The composer uses variant changes in the material, which are also found in the singing practice of the Don Cossacks.
The composer’s inclination towards dramatic and tragic concepts, manifested in his monumental works, is balanced by the world of light and kindness presented in the operas for children. The authors highlight the demand for Klinichev’s music at the present time.
