Charitable activities in the context of Rostov-on-Don cultural life (the second half of the 19th – early the 20th century): musical aspect
The article highlights the process of origin and development, as well as the peculiarities of the charity (“goodwill”) functioning in Rostov-on-Don. It is noted that the intensive growth of commodity production and trade, the emergence of a number of industrial enterprises contributed to a significant increase in the number of residents and, later, to the formation in Rostov of a certain wealthy stratum that gravitated towards charity. Based on this, Alexander Charitable Society, as the first voluntary association of this kind (1865), is characterized. The most important statutory requirements of this society, the number and accepted gradations of participants, and their personal financial contribution to the activities of this association are described. The sources used to replenish the society’s budget are considered (commercial enterprises, individual donations, entertaining and cultural-educational events), and the most important criteria for financial reporting are settled (regularity, publicity, differentiation). In addition, an overview of the similar activities of some other charitable associations that arose and functioned in Rostov during the last quarter of the 19th century and the pre-October era is provided.
Particular attention is paid to charitable projects in the field of musical art (concerts, musical and theatrical performances). Based on this, the mechanisms of practical interaction of Don charitable associations with the Rostov Musical Society (later – the Rostov branch of the Imperial Russian Musical Society) and figures of musical and theatrical art of Nakhichevan-on-Don are revealed. The significant role of city clubs (primarily the Commercial and Rostov ones), as well as Asmolov’s Theatre as initiators and organizers of charitable musical events at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is outlined. The specificity of the combination of musical, educational and entertainment trends in charitable events of this period is revealed.
