Polystilistics in the symphony genre: Finnish version
The use of polystylistics led, according to M. G. Aranovsky, to the emergence of a «cultural symphony». In the article, the object of study was the Finnish version of such a symphony, which is represented by the works of several generations of composers. Her first examples were the opuses of avant-garde composers H. O. Donner (The First Symphony, 1964) and K. Rydman («Symphony of Modern Worlds», 1968). Both compositions arose in the process of adapting the experience of modern European and American music in Finnish art and are of an experimental nature. Later, polystylistic techniques (quotation, allusion) and conflict dramaturgy, characteristic of works related to this technique, were actively used in the work of Kalevi Aho, the largest modern Finnish symphonist. The article examines the peculiarities of the use of polystylistics in the composer's Seventh Symphony (1988). It also has a searching character: it is the only one of Aho's symphonies that is based on the material of his opera «The Life of Insects».
