The formation of fusion music in the conditions of cultural revolution of the 1960s–1970s

The article traces the development of fusion music in the context of cultural transformations in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. The jazz scene of the second half of the 20th century was represented by both styles that adopted jazz traditions and trends that postulated new norms for jazz performance. After the revolutionary transformations of bebop and the shift in emphasis from the entertainment function of jazz to the elite, jazz practice for two decades assimilated the musical thesaurus proposed by the boppers and integrated its elements into jazz practice. Distinctive features of bebop were implemented in several directions – hard bop, east coast jazz and later in post-bop. But the socio-cultural situation that had developed in the United States by the second half of the 1960s contributed to the maturing of another crisis in the jazz sphere, which could not be resolved with the help of existing innovations. In addition to the development of jazz styles, by this time there was a clear separation of jazz and popular music, and rock made a strong statement. All these factors, along with the aggravated racial issues, became sources for the emergence of new music – fusion. The article briefly describes the current trends of the 1960s–1970s and significant tendencies in the work of jazz musicians, and also traces the beginning of the path of the formation of fusion. Pointing to the liminality of fusion music in the late 1960s, the author comes to the conclusion that this trend can be quite controversially attributed to the line of development of jazz styles. The synthetic nature of fusion is not limited to mixing elements of jazz and any other type of musical art. It includes elements of rock music, jazz, funk, as well as other current trends in the musical culture of the United States. Without following jazz traditions, but also without denying the achievements of previous stages of jazz development, fusion played an important role in the transition to synthetic practices on the world jazz scene.
