On the creative realization of Russian poetry in the works for chorus a cappella by Leonid Klinichev
This article presents a characterizing of the choral works by the renowned Rostov composer L. Klinichev. The author examines cyclical works and individual choruses a cappella to the words by M. Lermontov, A. Blok, and L. Lavlinsky, examining the selection of poetic sources and the subsequent musical translation of the corresponding texts. The researcher concludes that the composer possessed a significant degree of freedom in his deliberate transformations of the literary source, carried out with the aim of embodying a specific artistic image. The problem of the integrity of newly created cyclical works is examined, correlating it with the fundamental principle of a detailed embodiment of Russian poetic texts, which dominates L. Klinichev’s music. The composer gravitates toward a highly in-depth and multi-layered dialogue with the artistic content of a given poem, which is embodied in a variety of approaches to the constructed sound form and the implementation of polyphonic choral texture. The noted uniqueness of L. Klinichev’s individual choral writing correlates with the creative pursuits of Don poets of the second half in the 20th century – the authors of diverse cyclical works. This is clearly confirmed, in particular, by creative work of L. Lavlinsky (1930–2005), the author of a “story in verse” about Stepan Razin (“The Red Sun”). The researcher emphasizes the inextricable connection between L. Klinichev’s work and the traditions of Russian classical music culture. The undeniable need for further in-depth study of his vocal works is emphasized, as they are highly noteworthy in terms of the contemporary artistic “conjugation” between Russian poetry and newly created academic music for a cappella chorus.
