The concept of “National” in the published materials of journal “Music Academy” (1993–2003)
This article focuses on one of the central concepts of Russian humanities: “National”. When examining the “National” through the lens of the editorial policy of the journal “Music Academy” at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the use of the linguistic term “concept” appears entirely appropriate. This is due to the widespread definition of “concept” as a mental construct that accumulates a complex of knowledge, ideas, and judgments about a given object of reflection. Accordingly, the aim of the study was to identify the conceptual aspect of “concept” and a number of distinctive features that shape the uniqueness of Russian music in this specialized edition. The established chronological framework was determined based on two key premises. On the one hand, the end of the second millennium in post-Soviet Russia was marked by an “ethnic renaissance (paradox)”, which led to a visible interest in the revival and stabilization of traditional national culture. On the other hand, the chosen decade corresponds to the early, most complex period of Russian music in the post-Soviet era.
Based on an analytical study of over 300 journal articles, relying on receptive methodology, the following conclusion was reached: “National” is interpreted by most authors in a traditional sense, while the specific properties of “Russian”, concentrated with relatively high regularity around this concept, are differentiated into four groups (dominant tendencies, imagery and thematic sphere, continuity with the traditions of the Russian classical school, and aesthetic factors). This, in turn, allowed us to define a three-level structure for the concept under study, formed by conceptual, figurative, and value components.
