Off-centre sound producing techniques on the trumpet and its prepared types

The article deals with an experimental research of new trumpet sounds in works by P. Knight, Ch. Pruvost, R. Mehta as well as with peculiarities of off-centre sound producing techniques on the trumpet in contemporary compositions. The author aims at analysing sound producing techniques while performing compositions of the 20th-21st centuries on the trumpet and its prepared types. Such techniques are present in works by L. Berio, P. Knight, Ch. Pruvost, R. Erickson, H. Oehring, D. Erb, T. Mynbaev, and Tae Hong Park, which are taken as a practical basis for the article. The author also examines different combined ways of sound producing on the prepared flugelhorn using a clarinet mouthpiece and computer processing («Allotrope» by P. Knight). Ch. Pruvost’s performing technique aimed at revealing acoustic effects of the trumpet and their use in the experimental project «Ipteravox» is under analysis. A particular attention is paid to samples of the performing “sounded breath” technique in various dynamics in works by R. Erickson and H. Oehring. Taking D. Erb’s «Diversion for Two» as an example, the author shows methods of a mouthpiece reverse use in articulation with elements of verbal pronunciation. Phonemic structures of combined sound producing with variable amplitude of timbre vibrato are exemplified in «Concerto for trumpet with orchestra» by T. Mynbaev.
