Concert life of Madrid in the first third of the 20th century in the mirror of music criticism

The article is devoted to the role of music criticism in Madrid in the first third of the 20th century, which reflected and guided the course of the city concert life. The author highlights the most significant periodicals in which the most prominent musical critics of that era published their works. Among the topics covered, the critics were mostly focused on such problems as the development of Spanish national art, education, and in particular the concert life of the country and the place of modern music in it. The quotes presented in the study reveal the main ideas of these articles and reviews and allow us to feel the unique style of the authors.

The intensification of the concert life of Madrid at the beginning of the 20th century was the impetus for the development of musical journalism due to which a large number of announcements, reviews, interviews as well as biographical and analytical essays, translations of foreign theoretical works appeared in the press. Particular attention in the periodicals was paid to the activities of the two most important philharmonic organizations in Spain – the Philharmonic Society of Madrid (La Sociedad Filarmónica de Madrid) and the National Musical Society (La Sociedad Nacional de Música). On the pages of various publications we can often find discussions of the problems of the national repertoire in the programs of concert associations, of the perception of contemporary music.

The direction of musical thought in the first third of the 20th century was inextricably linked to the main cultural processes of the era. Critics and composers who published their articles promoted the idea of the revival of national composition school and the ways of its development. In addition, the activities of music journalism considerably influenced the formation of the listener’s reception in relation to modern music.
