The teaching practice of ornamentation in the treatise “A Singing Method…” of Paris Conservatoire

The article is focused on the teaching practice of ornamentation in the treatise “A Singing Method...” of Paris Conservatoire by Bernardo Mengozzi (1803). Within the contemporary artistic context, which actualizes the repertoire of that epoch, the given practice can be of interest to performers and teachers as well as scholars. Meanwhile, the treatise has not yet received due attention in Russian musicology. Following the chapter “On the Ornaments in Singing” of the treatise, the article separately considers the four main varieties of ornaments that B. Mengozzi included as the obligatory to practice at singing lessons: roulades, appoggiaturas, trills and gruppettos. Each of these elements is considered in accordance with the contents of the treatise, which includes explanation on the notation, its interpretation (with notated examples taken from the treatise), aspects of execution and practice. A comparative analysis has been conducted, for which it was required to address the original treatises of the 18th–19th centuries as well as scholarly works on ornamentation. The performed study demonstrates that in terms of ornamentation “A Singing Method...” of Paris Conservatoire substantially expands and clarifies the knowledge found in earlier treatises of the Singing school of Bologna, which includes numerous notated examples and didactic material, at the same time being an independent work with its own methodology. The further spread of the knowledge, introduced in the chapter “On the Ornaments in Singing” indicates the succession with later generations of musicians. Thus, a more detailed study of the treatise “A Singing Method…” of Paris Conservatoire makes it possible to get a broader picture of the singing and teaching practice of ornamentation of the 18th–19th centuries.
