The musical component features of commemorial performance by Jeremy Deller «We’re Here Because We Are Here» in the context of social turning-point action in arts

The article is devoted to the problem of exploration of musical accompaniment of modern artists’ performance projects dedicated to historical events. In the process of studying the synthetic nature of modern performances dedicated to the memorable dates of military history, sound space is considered as their central component. In this aspect, Jeremy Deller’s performance “We’re Here Because We’re Here“ stands out as one of the most significant projects. When studying the musical component of it the author drew upon such works as R. Goldberg’s “Performance Art: from Futurism to the Present” and K. Bishop’s “Artificial Hells. Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship”. The researchers, noting the significance of modern performative forms of art and the emotional rise “generated by contact between the performer and the public”, point out the significance of the musical component in Deller’s project.

The basis of the study was formed by numerous materials presented in various forms: video, photo Аспекты музыкальной культуры XX столетия and sound recordings that document the main parts of the commemorial performance “We’re Here Because We’re Here”. The author paid special attention to the issue of creating a specific sound space for the project, stating that it was singing that became a symbol of the representation of the memory of the fallen soldiers. The performance of the song by the soldiers doomed to death created a unique atmosphere that helped to reconstruct the events of 1916 at the beginning of the 21st century. The performance music, reproducing the tragic moments of the soldiers’ lives, became one of the key components of Deller’s project, allowing its participants to go beyond reality. “We’re Here Because We’re Here” became a symbol of the eternal memory of the fallen British soldiers, resurrecting the spirit of a bygone era.
