Program in music as an important factor of performing interpretation in the “artistic” etudes of Romantic era for violin solo

The article examines one of the common for the Russian theory and practice of bow instruments performance approaches to the “artistic” violin etude – a universal component of the concert ad pedagogical repertoire. An obvious connection between such etudes and romantic instrumental miniature in the 19th century is emphasized. That is where the apparent interest of the greatest violinists and composers in the various types of program music stems from; these tendencies more or less evidently influence the author’s concepts of etudes. In particular, the famous Caprice in E Major, Op. 1 No. 9 (“Сhase”) by N. Paganini is considered by the specialists from a position of original interpretation of the Renaissance and Baroque traditions. Specific features of the “chase” genre with centuries-old history (Italian “caccia”) which are recreated in this etude point to the possibility of several program interpretations – literal, symbolic (in the spirit of “Fetes galantes” pastorals), or parody and satirical. The duality of conceptual idea is also inherent in Etude-Caprice in A Major, Op. 10 No. 8 by H. Wieniawski. The parody of the author’s title (“The Canticle at bivouac”) is manifested in the “excessiveness” of virtuoso difficulties which evidently contradict with the “official” program. The sublime picture of performing music in the open air in fact acquires comic features (amateur singers, spontaneously carried away by the atmosphere of “competition” and trying to excel one another). On the contrary, the “musical portrait” of the greatest master of Romantic era – Etude in B Flat Minor Op. 48 No. 21 by H. Vieuxtemps (“Recollection on R. Schumann”) is notable for heartfelt character and lyrical intensity. As a whole, the named pieces demonstrate that interpretation plays a significant role when it comes to the concepts of the program «artistic» violin etudes of the 19th century.
