The doctrine of the vocal ornaments performing in the treatise “The Art and Physiology of Singing” by Enrico Delle Sedie
The article is devoted to the study of various types of vocal ornaments described in the treatise “The Art and Physiology of Singing” (“Arte e fisiologia del canto”, 1876) by the famous European singer and vocal teacher of the Paris Conservatory Enrico Delle Sedie (1822–1907). In the article, the concept of “ornamentation” is considered through the prism of the singing practice of teachers of the 19th century, whose methods develop the technique of vocal agility. The treatise by Delle Sedie highlights appoggiatura, gruppetto, mordent (mordente), trill (trillo). The preparatory stage for the performance of these complicated vocal and technical ornaments in singing is, according to Delle Sedie, the study of flute sounds (suoni flautati) and staccato sounds (suoni picchettati), as well as the performance of repeated (note ripetute) and dotted notes (note punteggiate), scales (scale). The characteristics of the echo effect (eco) deserves special attention. The author of the article believes that the use of this method, technically and emotionally close to “coloring”, is associated with the aesthetics of romanticism and is determined by emotional expressiveness and the search for new singing nuances and colors in the voice. The active use of crescendo and decrescendo in the formation of vocal agility is also a vivid example of this. The analysis of the practice of vocal ornamentation, proposed by Delle Sedie, allows us to talk about the individual characteristics of the methods of his pedagogical work. The Maestro accompanies each type of ornaments with comments, musical examples and the references to the exercises of M. Garcia (father), L. Cinti-Damoreau, G. Alary that are relevant for his era. In the focus of historically informed performance, all of them represent not only academic, but practical value.
