Opera «Klara Milich» by A. Kastalsky: in the space of intertext
This article is devoted to the analysis of Kastalsky’s opera «Klara Milich», which has been undeservedly forgotten, and whose concept, libretto and dramaturgy are largely determined by the presence of intertextual references of a whole range of musical and literary works. The range of texts reflected in the opera on different levels is largely determined by the context of the composer’s life and work, his reverence for the authors as well as by the nature of the creative dialogue that Kastalsky maintains with the literary source – the story by I. Turgenev. Cross references to the works of Russian and foreign literary classics, music theatre and drama in the form of quotations, allusions, reminiscences, borrowings of separate compositional and dramatic techniques are creatively transformed in the libretto and composition of «Klara Milich», creating additional semantic levels and engaging the listener into a dialogue with various cultural traditions. The intertextual analysis that plays an important role in revealing the concept of this opus, shows that the plot, composition, situational, lexical references to borrowed texts are an important factor in the successful interpretation of the literary source of the opera, which original dialogic potential was reinforced by Kastalsky. “Decoding” the echoes of literary works by W. Scott and W. Shakespeare, the composer also engages in a dialogue with the traditions of the lyric opera, most prominent examples of which in Russia we can find in the music by P. Tchaikovsky.
