Once again about the content of the Sonata for bayan by Albin Repnikov

The article is devoted to one of the most significant works of A. Repnikov – Sonata for bayan (1981), composed by a mature author. The name of Repnikov is well known among bayan players. The most popular among performers are his early compositions, and later ones are performed less often. The situation is similar in the academic literature: it mainly deals with early opuses. At the same time, the figurative structure and language of Repnikov’s mature compositions have become more complicated, the performer needs explanations in this regard.

From the memoirs of V. Kalaberda, the first performer of the Sonata, it is known about the composer’s intention to give certain names to the parts. The subheadings shed light on the figurative structure and content. The Sonata is dominated by the image of time, appearing in various forms in the course of development. The first part symbolizes the ontological time coming “From the depths of centuries”. It is associated with the image of a rune singer leading an epic story about the events of the distant past, and arising from the use of some features of a runic chant in the main theme. The second part draws the image of “Time fleeting”, the rapid running of which is shown by means of a bizarre scherzo. The third part, “Children’s Requiem”, is based on the intonation of the song “I’m forgotten and neglected” and represents the idea of the finiteness of human life, and also brings out the hero who feels uncomfortable in the modern world. The finale of the Sonata, which supposed to have the subtitle “Self-portrait”, pushes to the conclusion that the main character, who is in conflict with modernity and society, is no one else than the author himself. Repnikov’s penchant for autobiographical features in music was confirmed by researchers and the composer. In the Sonata, it was manifested by to the presence of the author’s monogram in the musical themes. Despite the impressive volume and the presence of contrasting parts, both figuratively and compositionally, the Sonata is a single monolithic composition. This is facilitated by the use of the attacca, and most importantly – the numerous thematic arches between the parts. Comprehension of the compositional and figurative features of Repnikov’s Bayan Sonata would be able to awaken performing interest in it.
