String Quartet in A major by N. Zhiganov as an early trial of composing a sonata-symphonic cycle
The article is devoted to the work by the outstanding Tatar composer Nazib Zhiganov – String Quartet in A major (1935), which was composed during the years of study in Moscow in the composition class of G. Litinsky. N. Zhiganov’s Quartet is interesting as the first trial in composing the form of sonata-symphonic cycle in the work of the composer, who was one of the greatest Soviet symphonists and the author of seventeen symphonies and a whole series of program symphonic works. N. Zhiganov’s String Quartet belongs to the early period of his work and it is the only work in this genre in the composer’s legacy. On the example of the quartet the author highlights the main directions of composer’s development, interconnected with the practice of national music education in the Soviet period. The Quartet is student’s work in which the young N. Zhiganov employed the intonations of Tatar songs in an organic combination with the structures and forms of European music. As a sonata cycle, the quartet has three movements, the first movement (Allegro, A major) is in sonata form, the second (Andante, C minor) in a complex ternary form, and the third – rondo (Allegro vivace, G major). The score of Quartet reflects the orchestral nature of the composer’s thinking, his interest in large-scale symphonic music. The methods of work with thematic material, including polyphonic techniques, as well as other features of the composer’s approach identified in the analysis the cycle subsequently became characteristic of N. Zhiganov’s creative method and symphonism in the mature and late periods.
