On the variety of hybrid genres in Uzbek composers' work

At the turn of the 20th – 21st centuries the genre fund in the music of Uzbekistan was renovated. This was largely due to the emergence of a number of ”hybrids”, formed by combining European (symphony, concert, opera, ballet) and oriental (makom, mukam, katta ashula, dastan) musical genres. Their interpenetration in compositions occurs at the levels of style, form, dramaturgy, language, figurative and emotional sphere. Composers’ experiments in this direction led to the emergence of new genre forms, such as the symphonymakom, concert-makom, concert-dastan, teleopera-dastan, polyphonic makom (mukam), concert-ballet. This ”mixes” manifest their own genre specifics, which determine semantics of the compositions, influencing their external contours and style. In this article, we focused on some genre ”hybrids” in the instrumental music of Uzbek composers in order to identify stable and mobile features of the genre, the degree of their influence on the logic of compositional development. On the example of the ”Polyphonic Maqom” by Nuriddin Giyasov and the Symphony-Maqom by Muhammadjan Atajanov we showed the penetration of maqom elements and, more broadly, the monodic nature of the traditional genre into symphonic and polyphonic music. This complex process led to the emergence of new genre forms – hybrids. The study of these compositions made it possible to determine how the way of thinking of the composers of Uzbekistan has been transformed over the past decades, identify the artistic significance of such works, proving the inevitability of convergence in the context of national art of the Western and Eastern musical traditions. Today this convergence acquires special significance as one of the forms of preservation of spiritual and intellectual heritage and traditions of the past generations in the context of modern art trends.
