The functions of pianist’s performing gesture in his musical activity: theoretical problems

The performing gestures of a pianist in the process of making music are associated with various systems of human activity. It is considered in terms of expression and content. In terms of expression, gestures are included in the human kinesics, or the dynamic system of its distributions, expressing certain meanings in the process of people’s communication in the environment. The types of kinesics are indicated in its various aspects.

The concept of archetypes of common activity, or its universal deep structures, is given. Some archetypes are conditionally named Art, Management, Rhetoric, Science, Production, Colonization. Within the framework of the special activity of the performer, they are assigned the following functions: expressive, organizational, communicative, cognitive, handicraft, mastering.

The performer’s gestures within the Art are expressive. They have audial and visual components. Accordingly, primary and secondary expressive functions are distinguished. These functions are examined in connection with the internal environment of the interpreted text and in the external environment of intertextual interactions.

The Management has an organizing function. The sound continuum of a work is divided by the interpreter in connection with intonation significant qualitative characteristics (in terms of pitch, meter rhythm, etc.) the performer attributes to sound objects. In addition, the performer embodies these attributions of the interpreted text with certain movements. The pianist constantly adapts the latter to the figurative and sound situation in accordance with the principles of ergonomics. Among them are the correspondence of the plastic embodiment to the intonation result, the naturalness of movement, the minimization of energy, and others. Other archetypes of the pianist’s activity and the corresponding functions of gestures are considered in subsequent articles.
