“Composers’ musicology” in Nizhny Novgorod: the genre diapason and conceptual features of academic research
The article considers the problem of academic research among contemporary Nizhny Novgorod composers. Determining the significance of theoretical reflection for the authors of musical works, the article aims to identify the leading directions and genres of composers’ research activity. Three groups of works are analyzed: ethnomusicological works (including the collection, transcription, and study of Nizhny Novgorod folklore and samples of traditional culture of the neighboring republics), works on music theory (including polyphony, harmony, and organology textbooks), and a broad line of research devoted to the study of the 20th and 21st centuries music. Special attention in the article is paid to the research activity of the composer Boris Getselev, whose theoretical heritage covers an extensive diapason of topics and genres: methodological works, articles on composers of the past and contemporaries, memoirs, detailed essays on his works, translations from German and Polish.
Using the example of Getselev’s theoretical works, it is shown that the academic texts reveal specific features of both the creative work and personality of the author himself and the phenomenon of “composers’ musicology”. Along with music, the author’s word is one of the natural ways of penetrating into the mysteries of the artistic laboratory. Recognizing that the phenomenon of Nizhny Novgorod “composers’ musicology” is not unique, nevertheless, the author of the article comes to the conclusion about the significance of this sphere – both for understanding the author’s vision and perspective on the general problems, and recreating the full panorama of the national music studies. Nizhny Novgorod “composers’ musicology”, having joined the broad stream of this twofold process, multiplies the arguments for the productivity of the combination of creative and academic activity.
