A dialogic tendency as priority feature of M. Shaposhnikova’s performing style

The published article is devoted to the performing art of Margarita Shaposhnikova, one of the largest representatives of Russian saxophone performing art. The author of the article notes that the monographic publications of Russian specialists cover in some detail the creative path of M. Shaposhnikova, her collaboration with famous composers of the last third of the 20th – early 21st centuries, the most important stages of the artistic biography of this outstanding musician, her pedagogical views, methodological principles, etc. This is much less common in characterizing the performing style of M. Shaposhnikova, a remarkable interpreter of Russian and foreign academic music for saxophone. The researcher states the artist’s commitment, on the one hand, to the ideas of interaction and mutual enrichment of various spheres of saxophone art (primarily academic, and popular, and jazz), on the other hand, to “psychologism” as a kind of quintessence of figurative and semantic conceptuality in interpretive readings of the modern and classical repertoire. In light of the above, it seems permissible to classify dialogism as one of the priority features of M. Shaposhnikova’s performing style, represented at various levels – from the implementation of multiple elements of saxophone technique to the interpretation of specific works. According to the author of the article, an illustrative example of such a dialogical approach is the interpretation of the play by the French composer P. Bonneau “Caprice en forme de Valse”. This piece, repeatedly performed by M. Shaposhnikova and presented in audio recordings, is characterized by a dialogical artistic conceptual concept: the genre definition of “caprice” (capriccio) is interpreted from the perspective of “romantic fantasy” based on the works of F. Liszt, C. Saint-Saëns and E. Ysaÿe. An analytical examination of this interpretation allows us to characterize the complex of expressive means, thanks to which the performing embodiment of “Caprice...” gives the impression of a genuine co-creation of remarkable musicians from different countries and ages.
