Improvisation in Western European music of the 16th–17th centuries
In modern performing and educational practice, as well as in scientific research related to performance issues, there is a special interest in the problems of style and style orientation. Particular attention is paid to authentic performance of music from past centuries and, accordingly, authentic teaching methods. In this regard, the topic of this work is devoted to the study of the concept of improvisation and all its varieties in the context of Western musical practice of the 16th–17th centuries. The main idea of the work is related to the study of the features of the interaction between a fixed, written author`s text and its free refraction and reproduction in the process of performance in the specified historical period. The main problem of the study is seen in the consideration of oral and written forms of musical creativity. Referring to theoretical sources, the authors describe the characteristic forms and genres of the oral improvisational process and consider issues of interaction between improvisation and written composition. At the same time, in the course of the discussion, the idea of the emergence of musical development techniques, as well as the very forms and genres of written creativity, in the improvisational flow becomes obvious. On the other hand, written samples often represent invariants and canonical models of numerous repetitions formed in the process of improvisational music-making. Appeal to a number of fundamental treatises of the 16th–17th centuries, as well as the study of the corresponding musical material, determine the historical approach to the study of the chosen problem. The article confirms the idea of the significant role of forms of improvisational musicmaking in the formation, development and crystallization of the musical language and style of a certain historical era. The content of the work implies its practical orientation and the possibility of using materials in educational music theoretical disciplines.
