I. Sollertinsky – critic and essayist – about I. Stravinsky’s musical theatre works of the 1910–1920s
The authors of the article examine the works by I. Stravinsky, which appeared in the musical-theatrical and concert repertoire of Petrograd – Leningrad in the 1920s and are characterized in the critical works (reviews, notices, creative portraits) by I. Sollertinsky. In these publications, insightful analytical observations coexist with research-level generalizations, which allows to consider the corresponding texts as “preparatory materials” for future large-scale research work. The handwritten outline of the monograph “Leningrad Musical Theatres in 1921–1928,” prepared by I. Sollertinsky (1936), can be considered as a supposed “sketch” of such work. Here is a special chapter devoted to the “style characteristics” of a number of works by I. Stravinsky (“Firebird”, “Fable”, “Pulcinella”) in correlation with the choreographic productions by choreographer F. Lopukhov as the most active promoter of these works. As additional materials related to the general perception of the artistic evolution of the “Russian Proteus” during the 1910–1920s, the authors of the article present fragments from I. Sollertinsky’s critical responses to the concert programs performed in Leningrad at that time by famous conductors – interpreters of I. Stravinsky’s music (E. Ansermet, O. Klemperer). These fragments from concert reviews contain very remarkable judgments about “Petrushka”, “The Sacred Spring”, “The Story of a Soldier...”, “Apollo Musagete”, “Oedipus Rex” as the most important stages of “gaining maturity” and strengthening the “late” composer style – according to the definition of I. Sollertinsky, “pure musical classicism in the best sense of the word”. Thus, the quoted statements and assessments are an important component of the historical reception of the musical theatre creative work by I. Stravinsky in the context of the early Soviet era.
