On Romantic strategies in the modern cinema
The article is devoted to the analysis of the influence of some semantic and formal-structural Romantic strategies on the audiovisual aspects of film texts. The author identifies strategies borrowed by cinematography from painting, music and literature of the Romantic era: rejection of normativity, scale, Romantic reflection and sensitivity, appeal to myth, appeal to discursive systems of the past and nostalgia. Romantic tropes, plots, types of heroes/heroines influenced the script-dramaturgical aspects of genre cinema. The desire of Romantic artists to transform the world through art is expressed in various experiments (color, light, form, program, composition). Cinema always does not set such goals; however, it invariably promises the viewer an emotional attraction in certain genres (action film, horror film, thriller), which is impossible without the means of film language – from editing to special effects. The article also considers the influence of the Romantic school of composition on film music. It manifests itself in quoting works by Romantic composers such as R. Wagner, J. Brahms, F. Schubert and others, in working with the structure and semantics of quotation musical material, film composers’ appeal to the Romantic orchestra, the leitmotif system, reliance on genre-style synthesis, musical dramaturgy, and the idea of program tendency. The synthetic nature of cinema, its susceptibility and openness lead to the fact that it can non-conflictingly combine various strategies, which fully reflects the oscillating (fluctuating) state of post-postmodern culture. Some of the strategies, for example, Romantic reflection, are integrated into the meta-modernist discourse, transforming into the so-called meta-modernist sensitivity. Specific principles of working with quotation material (repetition, deconstruction of the musical theme, the use of a large number of quotations from different styles and eras), on the contrary, implement the post-modernist “end of citation irony”.
