The main approaches to understanding the category of space in music: history and modernity

This article is devoted to the main aspects of understanding the category of space in music through the prism of the historical process of its formation. This is explained by the inseparability of musical art from the acoustic conditions of its realization. Attention is paid to the issues of perception of a musical piece from the point of view of binaural properties of human hearing, which make it possible to determine the location of objects in space using vertical (high-altitude), horizontal (panoramic) and deep (distance to the object) localization. Acoustic features related to the difference in reverberation time in rooms are also considered, which influenced the nature of music of different styles and eras. The central place is occupied by the problem of using space as an integral part of the artistic image of the piece. The historical process of formation of approaches to implementation of “the space factor” is shown: means of polyphony, work with a discharged and multi-layered texture, activation of synesthetic properties of perception of timbre, possibilities of dynamics and register. A special place is occupied by the composers’ experiments with physical space due to the possibilities of real stereo due to the different location of performers on stage and out of it. There is also an acousmatic space in which the real object is hidden from the listener, and the time of the sound’s existence is separated from its actual listening. Its features are reflected in the genres of concrete, electronic and electroacoustic music. The greatest possibilities for the realization of acousmatic space are found in musical installations, the task of which is to place an object, in this case a sound object, in a limited and filled with artistic meaning space.
