Methodological works by E. Ovchinnikov and V. Ozerov in the practice of Russian jazz education
The article analyzes the activities of the outstanding theoretical methodologists E. Ovchinnikov and V. Ozerov. Since 1973, these authors have created a number of important lecture courses, methodological developments, manuals, and subsequently the first textbooks in the field of jazz art. Due to the introduction of official jazz education in 1974, there was an urgent need to develop theoretical and methodological support for this field, which required the consolidation of the efforts of musicologists and theorists. In the process of creating primary research materials, specialists acted as innovators, since the lack of previous scientific traditions did not allow them to rely on existing methodological approaches. Ovchinnikov’s publishing activity peaked in 1980. Attention is focused on the preparation of the first of its kind domestic studies that focused on the socio-cultural interactions of jazz with literature, theater and social processes. Ovchinnikov was the first author of a handbook on rock music, which was published before other texts on the subject (1985). V. Ozerov’s works were mainly subordinated to the important functions of filling in the missing information about jazz. Having compiled translations of important German-language sources, he published many review papers based on foreign press materials. During the preparation of the article, the author worked with unpublished handwritten sources, drafts and plans-summaries of lecture courses formed by Ovchinnikov and Ozerov. Of considerable interest are the polemical reviews by V. Konen, which express her principled position on the need to develop a comprehensive textbook on jazz music styles.
