Heterogeneous vectors of composer’s work by Staffan Mossenmark in the aspect of performativity
This article explores the multifaceted creative work of Swedish composer and educator Staffan Mossenmark. It focuses on his individual strategies, which seek to overcome the elitism of contemporary academic art and social segregation through an interdisciplinary approach, which is purposefully implemented in Mossenmark’s original pedagogical theory and artistic practices. This study reveals the composer’s artistic method, shaped by his desire to democratize art and transcend its demarcations. These tendencies are embodied in his work with the “sound objects” of everyday life, as well as in his synthesis of theoretical principles of “musique concrete”, and “pedagogy of resistance”, and the creative intentions of artistic activism and critique of social institutions. Mossenmark’s most representative art projects and works Mossenmark’s artistic method is revealed through his solo works for bayan (accordion). In the triptych “Spirit of the Forest”, and “Spirit of Water”, and “Spirit of Air” special attention is paid to timbre and coloristic characteristics, complex rhythmic organization, and the semiotic direction of the performing gesture. This is predetermined by the author’s philosophical and metaphysical quest, aimed at synthesizing traditional Western and Eastern cultures, transcending the boundaries between sound and silence, between modern writing techniques and ritual archaism, and between past and present.
The article presents S. Mossenmark’s work as a holistic phenomenon, synthesizing artistic practice, pedagogical theory, and social activism within the framework of an original “megaproject” – implying “artistic pedagogical activism”. Accordingly, a relevant model of cultural dialogue is being developed, designed to overcome social segregation and enhance the recipient’s meaningful role as a co-author.
