Documentality in music: towards the problem of theoretical comprehension

The article is devoted to the problem of the theoretical conceptualization of documentary practices in musical art. The author notes that, despite the widespread use of documentary practices in contemporary art, scholarly interest is generally focused on particular media and forms, primarily documentary cinema and theatre, whereas documentary art as an interdisciplinary artistic phenomenon rarely becomes the subject of comprehensive analysis. As a result, a number of artistic practices, including musical art, remain on the periphery of the theoretical field. The present study proceeds from the assumption that the difficulties involved in the theoretical understanding of documentary elements in music are connected with the fundamental heterogeneity of the corresponding artistic practices: works that differ radically in their structure, aesthetic principles, and methods of working with source materials do not constitute a distinct generic or genre category. In this regard, the author proposes considering documentary elements in music as part of a broader problematic field associated with the forms of reality’s presence in musical art. On the basis of this approach, the article proposes a classification of the principal strategies through which music interacts with extra-artistic reality. Drawing on 20th- and 21st-century compositional practices (E. Salzman, P. Schaeffer, B. Beerman, S. Reich, among others), the author identifies three principal strategies: textual documentary practices (the inclusion of verbal documents in the libretto), visual documentary practices (the use of archival images and video projections), and the incorporation of acoustic reality into the structure of a musical work. In connection with the latter, the article analyses the distinction between the perception of sound as neutral acoustic material and sound as a carrier of meaning. The article concludes by emphasizing the necessity of further interdisciplinary research into documentary practices in music as an independent theoretical problem.
