Two composers’ readings of the tragedy «Romeo and Juliet» by W. Shakespeare from the position of the active analysis method by K. Stanislavsky

Contemporary stage art, including a musical theater, characterized by special attention to the directing, which is marked by the author’s approach. Comparative analysis of the libretto texts of the lyric opera by Ch. Gounod and the musical by G. Presgurvic, based on the tragedy of W. Shakespeare, is carried out in accordance with the K. Stanislavsky’s method of active analysis. The practical relevance of this study lies in the possibility of using its results in performing practice in the process of studying the text of a music theatre work from the standpoint of an active analysis of the play and role, directing and acting tasks. An active analysis of the stage works based on the same literary source allows directors and performers to comprehend the unique identity of each of them, which would serve the task of creating a meaningful interpretative reading of the composition, embodied on the stage. The analysis tool used in the research is the methodology of K. Stanislavsky’s student, the famous Soviet director G. Tovstonogov. Correlation of action outlines of three readings of the Romeo and Juliet story allows us to comprehend the quintessence of two interpretations of the play by the English playwright W. Shakespeare: lyric opera by Ch. Gounod, on the one hand, and musical by G. Presgurvic, on the other. According to the methodology of G. Tovstonogov, the director identifies five most significant events in the play – the initial, main, central, final, and the most important; it serves the starting point in creating original stage production. The functions of the characters of the works considered in accordance with their relation to the intended leading circumstance of the work (in the play by W. Shakespeare it is the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet).
