Compositions “Santana” and “Freezing – Ice drift” by G. Dmitriev: peculiarities of textured organization of musical material in conditions of a large performing staff

The article examines the features of the textured organization of musical material in the orchestral works of Georgy Dmitriev. The appeal to conceptual programmaticity in the works “Santana” and “Freezing – Ice drift” demanded from composer the originality of the methods of orchestral and textured organization. In conditions of large performing teams, Dmitriev introduces a special arrangement of performers on the stage, and each performing group of instruments has its own textured organization, due to which musical and “spatial differentiation of sound fields” is achieved. Proceeding from the principle of polyphony of images, composer builds in Santana a multi-layered form, each layer of which is distinguished by its timbre-textured originality and individual function. In the foreground is the string group, which is characterized by a rhythmically complementary texture, the principle of pointilism. The ensemble of soloists complements the string group, bringing variability to the sound. The soloists have individualized textured options. The choral parts are related to brass instruments, they thicken the sound of the second stage of “Santana”. Numerous percussion instruments perform coloristic and “recording” functions. In the composition “Freezing – Ice drift”, thanks to the textured principles, Dmitriev creates an illustrative effect. The textured organization of the composition is built from individualized versions of each performing group of instruments to sustained sounds covering the entire vertical, with the reverse process of restoring the original textured organization. As a result, it was found that thanks to the textured organization of the musical material Dmitriev creates in the compositions “Santana” and “Freezing – Ice drift” a special spatial-acoustic effect necessary for expressing artistic ideas and organizing the form. Also, the dramaturgy of the compositions is built using timbre-textured means.
