The role of program tendencies in performing interpretation of the modern concert and pedagogical repertoire for wind instruments ensemble

The author of the article discusses the problems associated with the effective organization of educational process in the class of wind instruments ensemble at the level of higher education. It is noted that one of the most pressing issues is related to the predominant orientation of wind ensemble repertoire of the late 20th – early 21st centuries to the modern music. This determines the need, dictated by the educational process, to master a certain number of works created by composers of the 20th century and characterized by considerable complexity not only in technical, but also in the image and sense aspect. The use of the program-associated approach recommended by the latest didactics, which makes it possible to activate the creative imagination of young musicians-performers, is intended to facilitate the successful overcoming of this difficulties. The initial stage of the study of modern ensemble music allows the purposeful use of certain instrumental theatre techniques, which make it possible to reveal the composer’s program idea with maximum clarity and to present it to the audience (“Two Terrible Trombones” by S. Leslie, 1997). At the next stage, it is permissible go on to learning works with a somewhat “veiled” program concept. Its identification and consistent “deciphering” can give the independent preparation of students – members of the ensemble – and subsequent joint rehearsals a pronounced heuristic character. The features of such a “decoding” are demonstrated by the author of the article on example of the suite “La cheminee du roi Rene” (op. 205, 1939) for wind quintet composed by Darius Milhaud. A kind of “source” for this suite was the music written by D. Milhaud for the feature film “Cavalcade of Love”, which predetermined both the implied “plot” of the program instrumental cycle and the probable interpretations of individual pieces. The historical location of the depicted events (15 century) indicated by the author can also be correlated with the multifaceted “sound atmosphere” of the quintet, which combines emphasized “archaic” and acutely modern polytonal coloring.
