A modern vocalist in the “dialogue” with musical classics: the heuristic aspect

The published article argues that heuristic methods are a significant component of professional music education. Modern Russian didactics is prone to pay special attention to the heuristic approach, which is inherent in this sphere of musical art. At the same time, the heuristic aspect in professional musical performance has so far been considered by specialists only one of “stimulating” factors of the creative process. According to the author of the article, the study of the greatest performers of the 20th century, including famous operatic singers, allowed to identify illustrative examples of the heuristic method application. Among such examples is D. Fischer-Dieskau’s research essay on F. Schubert’s vocal cycle “Winterreise” (from the book “Following in the Tracks of Songs by Schubert”, 1971) advocating for the necessity of performing two author’s “versions” of this opus as independent works. The result of the research was a new edition of the “Winterreise”, made by D. Fischer-Dieskau. Another example is the very fruitful work of P. Schreier (the 1970s) in the half-forgotten nowadays genre of the Austro-German Lied of the first half of the 19th century for voice and guitar. In addition to the newly discovered and presented to the audience little-known works by K. M. von Weber and F. Schubert, the performer carried out a very interesting arrangement of the Schubert’s cycle “Die schone Mullerin” for the same ensemble. A remarkable example of heuristics in the field of musical theatre is the professional discussion of early 1950s (with the participation of A. Toscanini) described by G. Valdengo regarding the traditional vocal “additions” (puntaturi) used by Italian singers during opera performances – in particular, “La Traviata” by G. Verdi. The mentioned examples testify to the need for an in-depth study of heuristic methods in the artistic practice of musicians-performers.
