Off-centre techniques of playing wind instruments in the special literature of our country (article 2)

The article continues a series of review analytical essays on wind instruments modern performing art and characterizes off-centre playing techniques as significant artistic innovations in this area. The noted innovations are consistently represented by the author with the help of comparative descriptions of the relevant specialized literature in Russian – monographic studies (dissertations and related “compulsory” publications), manuals and problematic articles. The author’s differentiation of the most important trends maintained in this series, accompanying the description and typological ordering of the mentioned offcentre techniques of playing (“composer-musicological” and “methodological-performing” approaches), is projected onto modern Russian oboe literature (“late” Soviet period, or 1980s, and the post-Soviet era). In particular, special attention is paid to the works by composers D. N. Smirnov (“Modern Interpretation of Woodwind Instruments”, 1982) and N. Khrust (dissertation “New Instrumental Techniques: A Trial of Classification”, 2017) which uniquely reflect the dynamics of the successive development of the first of the above approaches over three and a half decades. The article “Specific methods of sound production on woodwind instruments” by B. Dikov (1985) and the dissertation research “Ways to expand the expressive possibilities of woodwind instruments in the music of the second half of the 20 century” by I. Viskova (2009), also separated by a significant chronological interval. According to the author, the synthesizing approach is also very promising, which was represented in the Russian translation of the methodical work “Introduction to the problems of new possibilities for playing the oboe” by the Czech researcher M. Goshek (1992).
