Sonata for Saxophone and Piano by E. Denisov in context of the modern tendencies in expansion of the chamber ensemble repertoire of our country

The article is devoted to the Sonata for Saxophone and Piano by E. Denisov (1970) – one of the earliest examples of Russian chamber ensemble music for this instrument. The history of making the named opus, various aspects of its performing embodiment in the last quarter of the 20th century are covered (J. M. Londeix, M. Shaposhnikova). The composer’s fundamental commitment to the interaction of various stylistic trends – classical, “avant-garde” academic and jazz – is noted as a very promising approach that is conducive to the development of modern performance and the replenishment of the concert and chamber ensemble repertoire for the saxophone. From a historical perspective, the most important consequences of this approach are outlined. First of all, for two decades the saxophone occupied one of the priority places in the work by E. Denisov (“Two Pieces” for Saxophone and Piano, “Concerto piccolo”, Quintet for Four Saxophones and piano). New techniques for playing this instrument, used by the composer in the mentioned Sonata, were received with interest and implemented in many ways by other masters of country in the indicated period. Finally, the original synthesis of academic and jazz stylistic components attracted the attention of a number of modern musicians of the “third direction”, who are prone to similar combinations and interactions. Nowadays, the Sonata by E. Denisov is considered as an example of a truly universal implementation of the rich expressive and technical capabilities of the saxophone. This contributes to its regular inclusion in the programs of performing competitions for young instrumentalists and its increasingly active dissemination in the concert and pedagogical repertoire of music high schools (for academic and pop-jazz specializations).
