“The complicated theory of grace notes”, or Appoggiaturas in the works by teachers of Paris Conservatory singing school in the 19th century
The article is devoted to the study of appoggiatura in the works of teachers of the singing school of Paris Conservatory in the 19th century. It is focuses on the works of the teachers, who worked there at different times: B. Mengozzi, M. Bordógni, E. Delle Sedie, M. García Sitches, as well as students, who studied singing with the Italian teachers. L. Cinti-Damoreau, H. Panofka and J. A. Andrade were among those students. Discussions in general direction of studying of appoggiatura standard developing trends in the works of the named teachers are related to the identification of sustainable theoretical and practical aspects of the description of appoggiaturas borrowed from the Italians directly or indirectly. Special attention is paid to their use in the treatises, terminology and graphics. Their special analysis represents not only the difference in tastes of their use, but also different graphics of the ornament. However, the studies of the teachers from Paris Conservatory demonstrate a general view of the diversity of appoggiaturas given with varying degrees of detail in the works of teachers of Paris Conservatory one can speak equally about a certain universality of the position of this school and about the set of individual approaches that each teacher aired. The conducted research suggests that appoggiaturas in the works of singing teachers of Paris Conservatory are vestiges of an apparent pre-Romantic inspiration that sought to bloom the melodic lines, firmly based on traditional “formulas” of the Baroque-Classical era. Lack of common practice of fixing the appoggiatura, as well as reliance on “taste” and “experience” of teachers, were left a chance for individual solutions in the applications of the ornaments.
