Sonata for Flute and Piano by A. Jolivet in aspect of the late composer’s style
The article elucidates the most important features of the late work of the outstanding French composer Andre Jolivet (1905–1974). The predominance of synthesizing tendencies characteristic of the individual compositional style of the 1950s – early 1970s is emphasized. In particular, A. Jolivet’s artistic strivings of the earlier time (flexible interaction of various techniques, expressive means and devices of “New Music”, orientation towards “democratic art”, implementation of “magical” figurative and semantic concepts in “dialogue” with the traditional institutions of the academic system musical genres) find universal realization not only in ballets and oratorios, instrumental concerts and symphonies of this period. Very remarkable examples of “late” stylistics are presented in the chamber-ensemble works with the participation of wind instruments by A. Jolivet. A clear confirmation of this is the well-known opus – Sonata for Flute and Piano (1958), considered by the author of the article taking into account the specific problems of performing interpretation of a multifaceted composer’s concept. It is emphasized that in-depth comprehension of the expressive potential of each of the instruments – participants in the chamber duet – is accompanied in the named sonata cycle by the statement and very inventive solution of multiple technical problems. As illustrative examples, the metro-rhythmic organization of ensemble polyphonic facture, timbre-register pairings of interacting parts and other performance tasks are examined in detail.
In general, as the author of the article notes, the Sonata for Flute and Piano is one of the most interesting chamber ensemble works by A. Jolivet, representing the most important features of his late composer’s style. The outstanding artistic merits of this work predetermined its significant position in the modern concert and pedagogical repertoire for flute.
