“Pictures of the Quiet Don” in the works by Rostov composers: 1940s–1980s (essay 2)
This essay presents an overview of “musical pictures” devoted to the Don region, created in the 1970s–1980s and belonging to the well-known Rostov composers – L. Klinichev, V. Krasnoskulov and A. Kusyakov. According to the author of the article, these masters are united by the desire to recreate the bright pages of the history of the Don region, to glorify the unique beauty of its nature, to introduce listeners of the last quarter of the 20th century to the inexhaustible wealth of song folklore. In addition, the work of the above-mentioned composers is characterized by continuity with certain traditions of artistic embodiment of the “Don theme” laid down in the 1940s–1960s. In particular, the multifaceted embodiment of the “pictures of the Quiet Don” presented in the works of L. Klinichev is related to the main intention to form largescale artistic and conceptual designs of truly dramatic scope. In various genres that are versatile reveal the “Don theme” (symphonic suite and vocal-orchestral poem, choral concert and multi-act ballet), the dominant tendency in L. Klinichev is the synthesis of epic and lyrical principles, characteristic of folklore, in the context of symphonized drama. On the contrary, the appropriate “pictures” in the interpretation by V. Krasnoskulov are distinguished by the dominance of lyrical (vocal cycles and separate songs) or epic principles (cantata “Don Songs”). The work by A. Kusyakov in this context appears as a “summing up” associated with the “summary” of the previously established traditions of the dramatic and active programmatic embodiment of the “Don theme”. It was the orchestral works of A. Kusyakov (“The Building of Atommash”, “Don Festive Overture”) that were the “final” in a series of large-scale symphonic opuses – “pictures of the Quiet Don” in the 20th century.
