Educational structure of RMS/IRMS: investment in the future
The article examines a little-studied aspect of the history of Russian music education related to the activities of the Imperial Russian Musical Society (RMS/IRMS). The said activities are presented in the context of the targeted implementation of plans for musical and general artistic development in Russia. Emphasizing the value and viability of the national network educational construct developed by the RMS/IRMS, modern researchers consider it as a promising intellectual investment in the future. The authors of the article introduce into circulation in musicology a remarkable archival document – “Curricula of Music Educational Institutions”, approved by the Research and Artistic Section of the Academic Council attached to the People’s Commissariat of Enlightenment, in September 1922. This document, elaborated in the post-October period, actually consistently relies on the original multi-level educational model positioned by the RMS/IRMS. While maintaining a similar unification of the list of recommended disciplines and endto-end fixation of the successive connection between educational levels (from primary to higher), the “Curricula” bring continuity and sustained systemic orderliness to the previous design of the RMS/IRMS. The specification of the technologies used in the process of forming the system of musical enlightenment and professional education, as well as the establishment of certain requirements for the development of professional qualities at each level of education seem to be strategically important. Thus, Russian musical education essentially acquires the prospect of end-to-end and consistent controllability of the multi-level educational process, its diverse adaptation at the regional level, etc. The analysis of the aforementioned document, presented by the authors of the published article, allows to talk about the investment nature of the achievements of the Imperial Era, which acted as drivers of the subsequent development of artistic, educational and musical infrastructural resources of our country.
