Correlations between musical and verbal semiotics in the Postmodern era

The article examines semiotic similarities and differences between verbal and musical types of text at the present stage. As similar characteristics, the following properties inherent directly to the sign are proposed: direct, denotative semantic expression and metatextual dimension that ensures communicative interaction with the anthroposphere as a whole. The differences are associated, first of all, with personal features of the recipient, his ability to perceive synthetic and analytical text, as well as heuristic mechanisms and principles of cognitive economy, which are becoming increasingly relevant in the postmodern era with its constantly growing information load on a person. Depending on their orientation, both verbal and musical signs are divided into extra-textual and intra-textual based on their relationship with external reality and other textual elements. The former refers to reality beyond the text, while the latter are focused on the text itself. The extratextual signs have direct or indirect empirical validity, while the self-referential ones contribute to symbolization of the text and creation of a sign structure without relying on any set of observable realities beyond it. With this approach, the sign becomes not denotative, but reflexive, referring to itself or other signs. In this case, music becomes a bearer of immanent meanings with sound semantic elements, while only the identification of sound signs and their interrelations without any reference to the outside world is important. From the semiotic point of view, music has a centripetal tendency with a focus on the sound material, in contrast to verbal constructions, where the semantic emphasis is aimed beyond the immediate text, creating connotative meanings and relying on the context according to the centrifugal principle.
