Shatskaya on music education of schoolchildren: towards the problem of pedagogical direction

This article examines the research and methodological contributions of Valentina Shatskaya, one of the leading figures in Soviet music pedagogy and key organizers of the state system of music education in the USSR during the second half of the 20th century. It highlights the fundamental role of the large-scale concept of artistic-aesthetic education for children and youth, developed by V. Shatskaya and her colleagues in the 1940s–1960s. This concept had a significant impact on the development of musical culture not only in the Soviet Union but also in several European, Asian, and Latin American countries. Contemporary scholars studying V. Shatskaya’s work unanimously recognize her substantial contribution to the methodological framework for training qualified music pedagogues in our country educational system. The article emphasizes the need for a circumstantial and multidimensional comprehension of pedagogical direction as a crucial factor in effective organization of music education in schools. It also underscores the importance of the successful integration of three key components in the educational process: curricular, extracurricular, and out-of-school activities. Furthermore, the study asserts that music education should function within a broader artistic context, fostering the development of students’ imaginative thinking and syn-аesthetic associative ideas. Within the framework of her educational approach, V. Shatskaya considered the organic interrelation of musical-performing, theoretic-analytical, and historical-cultural components of pedagogical direction, adapting them to the specific needs of lecture-hall training such as music hearing and playing the instrument. Special attention is given to the psychological awareness of teachers, who must understand unique characteristics of different age groups and build specific models of productive communicating on this base. The article highlights the essential significance of pedagogical direction in formation of “developmental” music perception, which remains a central element of artistic-aesthetic education.
