Refraction of polyphonic techniques in the piano sonatas by N. Kapustin

The article is devoted to the use of polyphonic techniques in N. Kapustin’s piano sonatas, which, like the composer’s other opuses, synthesize the means of academic music and jazz. Attention is focused on the dramaturgic and formation functions of polyphony, which determine the specifics of the composer’s interpretation of the sonata and are indicative of the correlation of the two traditions in N. Kapustin’s highly original style. In the process of considering the problem, two aspects are taken into account: the first is connected with the author’s use polyphonic techniques that are characteristic of jazz (polyphony of layers, heterophony, different modifications of polyrhythm and poly-meter), the second – with the principles of development and forms characteristic of European professional music (primarily imitation, including augmentation, diminution, inversion, stretta, within the framework of canon or fugato). The analysis of the latter is the focus of this article. It is theу, being an important component of Kapustin’s compositional method, in the conditions of the dominant role of the homophonic-harmonic warehouse that provide for the concentrated musical texture and artistic content. As a result of this research, the author comes to the conclusion about the special role of polyphonic techniques in N. Kapustin’s piano sonatas, which not only contribute to active thematic, textural and dynamic development in the development sections, but also become an important method of thematizing the musical texture, organizing the interaction of its lines and layers, and concentrating expressiveness at all stages of composition. The composer’s analyzed works are a vivid example of individualization of polyphonic thinking and original implementation of classical counterpoint in the context of the synthesis of academic and jazz traditions.
