Preconditions of the formation and development of high-school choral conducting education in Saratov of the first half of the twentieth century

The article highlights the preconditions for the formation and development of high-school choral conducting education in the first half of the 20th century based on L. Sobinov Saratov State Conservatory. Characterizing the origins of the formation of the regional performing school in the appropriate region, the researcher emphasizes the fundamental multiplicity of significant factors of the specified process. Its visible result is the organization of the high-school Department of Choral Conducting (1943) as the most important representative of the Saratov choral conducting school, which was established during the second half of the century. In addition, the article describes little-known archival materials related to the activities of educational structures – the immediate predecessors of the named high-school Department – and stored in the Saratov Conservatory and the State Archive of the Saratov Region. The researcher reviews various socio-cultural, ideological, artistic-creative and educational tendencies that determined the priority contribution of the Saratov Conservatory to the process of formation and development of choral performing and professional choirmasters’ education in the region. It is emphasized that the period of the 1910s–1940s can be called fundamental and the most promising in relation to the designated process. Such preconditions as intensive concert and performance activities with the participation of conservatory students, the significant role of the vocal-orchestral repertoire with the involvement of choral collectives, the widespread propaganda of mass songs, the encouragement of amateur vocal-choral activities, the centralized development of higher musical education in the USSR, the administrative reorganizations of the war years (including the temporary amalgamation of the Moscow and Saratov conservatories), the targeted consolidation of choral disciplines in the curriculum – all this served as a suitable foundation for the forming of the Department of Choral Conducting and as an independent high-school division and the subsequent productive work of the latter.
